"You are glowing and look so beautiful. I'm sure it is a girl."
How many times have people (even strangers) predicted the sex of your baby… with great confidence, at that! Fun, it may be. But can the shape of your belly really reveal whether you need to shop for pinks or blues?
Tummy Talk
That growing bump is not only a sign of your pregnancy but can tell if it is a boy or a girl. A big tummy signals a girl, while a small one says it is a boy… or so they think.
The truth is the size of your tummy depends on the muscles, uterine tone and the position of the baby. It has got nothing to do with your baby's sex.
Chesty Issues
According to popular belief, if your left breast is larger than the right, it is a girl. And it is vice-versa when it is boy.
By nature, a woman's breasts are asymmetrical. "The body changes considerably during pregnancy and breasts are no exception. When you start lactating, the size increases," informs Dr. Reshma Rafi, Laparoscopic surgeon & Infertility Specialist, Saifee Hospital, Mumbai.
Rest Easy
When the mother-to-be is comfortable resting on her left side, she is carrying a boy. Again, this is yet another myth.
Usually pregnant women are advised to lie on their left side for few minutes daily. This improves the blood supply to the baby. Other than this, you can rest in whichever position is comfortable.
Sweet Tooth?
Many people think that craving a particular type of food is related to your baby's sex. Craving chocolate means you are having a girl. Or your sudden aversion to those all those chaats and other junk food is the sign of a boy.
According to Dr. Reshma, "Food cravings are caused by hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy."
A Different Beat
Another myth is that the foetal heart rate of a boy and girl differs. You are having a girl if the heart rate is above 140 beats per minute (bpm) For a boy it is below 140 bpm.
However, Dr. Reshma refutes this idea. She says, "A baby's heart rate is not affected by its sex."
Only three medical tests can determine the baby's sex.
- Sonogram
- Amniocentesis
- Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
Sex determination tests are banned in India. These are done only in cases where there is a possible genetic abnormality. It is usually done between 18-22 weeks."
So for now, just enjoy your pregnancy and all the fun and games that go with it.
