THESE days, being a first-time parent does not mean you call your parents or the in-laws for every single parenting tip. Just one drive to the nearby bookstore, and you will find a wealth of guides to help you understand everything from vaccination and baby food, to what toys to buy for your kid.
But did you know you could stimulate your child's brain to increase his/her intelligence from an early age? How?

A new course in Mumbai city aims to do just that; tell mothers about 'brain food'. Especially in the age group 8 months to 17 months.
Launched by Swati Popat Vats, Director Podar Education network; the program called Brain bear asks mothers to be 'mentally tuned in' to their child's mental development.
Clinical psychologist Seema Hingoraany maintains that maximum development of the child's brain happens upto the age of 2 years; an age where the mother does not even realise what stimulation to provide.
"At 50 per cent of body weight in the first weeks of foetal development and 2 to 4 per cent of body weight at adult; the brain is a fascinating organ to study and mould. All brain functions are in place at birth; the neurons are in place (a 100 billion nerve cells); but they are not connected. Sensorial experiences connect neurons and sharpen the intellect of the child. These connections are called synapses; almost a 1000 trillion of them. The picture clearly explains the difference between a stimulated and unstimulated brain," informa Swati Popat. |
