Here are some ways in which stress could cause fertility problems.
When Stress Sets In…
Your body undergoes certain hormonal changes which may interfere with normal ovulation.
Excessive stress could lead to a reduced number of eggs being produced, which could lead to anovulation or irregular periods.
An irregular ovulation cycle will make it difficult for you to gauge when your fertile period is and further reduce your chances of getting pregnant.
In severe cases, you may stop ovulating altogether.
What About Your Partner?
Stress can affect your partner's fertility as well.
- It could lead to a reduced sperm count.
- In some cases, stress can cause erectile dysfunction. This could result in a slump in your sex life, which in turn could reduce fertility.
Treating Infertility
Infertility is usually treated with fertility drugs that promote ovulation by stimulating the hormones. These drugs are usually prescribed to women with irregular periods and an irregular ovulation cycle.
In some cases Hormone Replacement Therapy is used to induce ovulation.
If there is a blockage in your fallopian tube, a surgery may be necessary. Micro-surgery is sometimes indicated to correct a tubal blockage.
If there is a problem with the uterus, then small doses of oestrogen replacement therapy (hormones) is given at the time of ovulation.
Remember, you and your partner are extremely stressed right now. So don't blame each other or yourself for the fertility problem. With a little attention, it can be worked through.
