But is hair oil really the answer to all your hair woes? Read further to have your doubts cleared.
Flaky Scalp
Remember, you usually get dandruff due to a dry scalp. And what better way to get rid of it than applying oil, right?
Dermatologist Dr. Chetan Oberai says that when you get dandruff due to a dry scalp, the oil you apply mixes with the dandruff. This dandruff is removed when you shampoo and hence you get an impression of reduced dandruff. However, in reality oil does not help to rid you of your dandruff in any way.
Unless of course, it is a medicated hair oil specially made for getting rid of dandruff.

Applying the Midnight Oil
If you have dandruff and are prone to skin problems you might want to think twice before applying oil overnight.
While sleeping the excess oil might trickle down to your face along with the dandruff resulting in blackheads on your forehead. The oil on your face can also aggravate acne.
You can apply oil on the tips instead of the scalp and put it on the scalp an hour or two before a hair wash.

You may oil your hair regularly in the hope of keeping whites at bay. Unfortunately losing hair colour has nothing to do with oil. Hair colour is lost due to a genetic tendency or age.
Thicken or Thin
Remember, the probability of your hair being thin or thick is hereditary. So, applying oil is not going to change that. However, Dermatologist Dr. Jolly. R. Shah says, "It is scientifically proven that castor oil thickens hair. But make sure you use coarse castor oil and not the refined one."

Improving Hair Growth
Hair oil in particular does not improve growth of hair because hair is a dead body part. What might help is a hair message as it improves the blood circulation in your head, thus encouraging better hair growth.
