But you also suffer from hyper acidity. Could it be that your love for these Indian foods is causing the acidity?
"An Indian diet per se does not cause acidity. However, if you already suffer from it, then a diet rich in spices and fat can aggravate your existing condition," says Nutritionist, Sushila Sharangdhar.
So what is acidity?
The stomach produces an acid called hydrochloric acid that aids in digestion. The flow of this acid is controlled by certain hormones, depending on the type of food you eat.
But, when the stomach exceeds the production of the acids, it results in hyper-acidity.
Then what causes acidity?
"Lifestyle and diet is the main cause of concern. Today's fast-paced life has left us with little time to prepare nourishing food. So, we tend to compensate for it with junk food, which is high on saturated fats and external food agents," informs Sushila.
Who's Prone?
If you tend be nervous and anxious a lot, or have a stressful job, then you will be more prone to acidity.
Mood changes also tend to affect hormones, which in turn affects the flow of hydrochloric acid. Therefore, higher your anxiety or stress levels, the higher your acidity level.
Diet and Acidity
What foods should you omit or have in moderation in your diet to avoid acidity?
- Tea and Coffee
Do not have tea or coffee on an empty stomach. The caffeine tends to react negatively with the acid.
- No Water
Water tends to dilute the acid. However, a lack of water in your body only increases the concentration of acid. It can also cause constipation.
- Skipping Meals
Don't skip breakfast. There is a big gap between your dinner and morning meal. When you skip a meal or your stomach is empty, the acid in the stomach reacts with the stomach juices which in turn results in gas formation, heartburn and acidity.
- Refined Food
All junk foods are refined food that are high on saturated fats. High fat content also tends to increase the acidity levels. So, all those fried foods like burgers, fries and chips should be avoided like the plague. Also, avoid food made of maida, ghee and oil.
- Too Spicy
Most spices available in India like jeera (cumin seeds), turmeric or corriander powder are good, if used in moderate quantities.
It in fact, helps digestion. However, spices like hot chillies and garam masala's have the opposite effect. Highly spicy food aggravates the acidic factor.
- No Non-Veg
A non-vegetarian diet is highly acidic in nature and should be avoided. However, if you can't cut it from your diet entirely, limit the intake to a serving per week.
- Say No to Hard Drinks
Alcohol and wine are highly acidic and having that while suffering from acidity will only increase your discomfort. It can also lead to stomach ulcer.
- Controlled Emotions
Apart from the type of food, eating while you are angry or upset can also increase hyperacidity.
